Car Donations - Frequently Asked Questions

Car donation or vehicle donors are still eligible for a tax deduction on their itemized federal tax return! When donating a car to charity donors are eligible for a minimum deduction of $500 or the amount their vehicle sells for, whichever is greater.

How will I know how much my tax deduction will be for my car donation?
If the value of your donated vehicle is greater than $500, you will usually be notified of the selling price within 30 days of its sale.

What types of vehicles are accepted for donation?
Many vehicles are accepted, whether they are running or not!

What do I need to have? 
You must have either a title or transferable registration for the vehicle and the keys to it. In addition, your vehicle cannot have any missing parts, including the battery and all of the tires have to be inflated. Your vehicle must be in a place where a large tow truck can easily get to it.

What if I can't find the title?
If you cannot find your title, please make sure to obtain a duplicate title from your local Department of Motor Vehicles.

How long will it take for my car to be picked up?
Generally, it usually takes from 2-5 business days from the date the title is received for the vehicle to be picked up. The towing company will call in advance to make the arrangements.

Do I need to be at home or the location of the car or vehicle for the pickup?
If your car is parked on a city street, someone will need to be available when the tow truck arrives. You do not have to be present if your car is parked in your driveway and is in a position where a large tow truck can easily get to it. In this case, you'll need to tell the towing service where you'r keys will be. Don't put the keys in the mail though.
